A friendly letter from the International University of Struga

In June I wrote a post on private universities in the Balkans with strange names or websites. For some reason, the blog was picked up a few days ago and become quiet popular. In addition to a short article in Vijesti which noted that UDG (or as a reader calls is JuDiDži) is on number 3 of the top 10, I also received the letter below from the International University of Struga.

Dear Mr. Florian Bieber,

Well, Mr. Bieber let us teach You that when a researcher comes out with such accusations should make serious research because any other allegation without facts is cause for a criminal offense.

Even relying on data from our website, we responsibly claim that you have not handled it well because what you say African-American students, is information that we have a good academic collaboration with the University of California precisely with American Heritage University.

In the future when you undertake to write articles of this type be well informed and do not play with the dignity of institutions and employees. From where do you know the academic staff and their quality? You stay in your office, click on the web pages of universities and make decisions, well, Sir in order to come up with such facts at least you are supposed to stand up from the chair in which you are pinned and to visit these universities and explore, if one day you want to become a professor in the true sense of the word.

According to the above and according to the values that should possess a professor turns out that you are in the top list of most miserable professors who play and imagine they are scientists.

Obviously you need attention!

We inform you that for Your accusation the legal department of our university is preparing to submit criminal charge because it is a slander.

Sincerely,

International University of Struga

Now I should clarify a few things: the list of “bizzare” universities was based on the self-presentation of the universities and their name. Some might be trying hard to become respectable institutions, some are degree mills (I just heard that there is a university in the region housed in a former mill).

Now specifically for the International University of Struga. When I wrote that “According to the website, the uni boasts many African-American and Asian-American students, palm trees,” this was not based on field work, but on irony. If one visits the website of the university the pictures look like they were bought from the ACME university photo shop and do not seem to show much of IUST. Thus, if one were to rely on the photos, it would look like the student population of IUST looks more like that of a college in California than on lake Ohird.I am also curious to hear how claiming that a university is having African and Asian-American students and palm trees is slanderous (even if it is not true).

You should be ashamed by the manner you used your blog to represent universities that you have never attended nor visited. Who will put which picture on their web site or colors they use is definitely not reason to call them bizzare! Most of the people are superficial enough to read the head line and just make a conclusion there is something REALLY STRANGE with the universities you mentioned, that they do not provide proper education etc.. Also, there is a language barrier, so if you think that some name is bizzare, it doesn`t proves it really is bizzare because you do not even know our alphabet. I have never attended any of these universities, but I know many people who are, and all of them think that your stupid blog is really offensive to all the students living and studing in Balkans.

a benign joke could be offensive just to those holding their noses up high, like you guys from private unis

    • Milos says:

Florian is a person that is running Balkan Yahoo network for the last 10 years and deserves all respect from all academic minded people in the Balkans.
What he pointed out is whole truth. Education institutions in the Balkans and in Former Yugoslavia received huge hit and are not on the recovery truck .
Neither is Struga university nor prime ministers of Montenegro UDG with its pathetic dean and rector who is preaching ” history of the future” while for the whole time pocketing previously state owned assets.

  2. Zhidas says:

the poor english in the letter is a result of poor and direct translation from a local language…..

  3. M.M says:

Another mistake that you have made is “no translation can do justice to the BOSNIAN original” when describing University in Novi Pazar. If you already understand “Bosnian” original, you should also know that there is no such thing as Bosnian language, and if you refer that to Bosniak people (muslim people living in Bosnia and Serbia, calling themselves members of Bosniak nation) you should know that their language is BOSNIAK language.
It is very important thou in Bosnia&Herzegovina there is 3 nations and 3 languages, and neglecting that you neglect constitutional right to members of another two nations on their own language.
Sorry if it is complicated, but Bosnia is complicated, universal country.

    • Callao y Arenales says:

Bosnia is complicated? All the jokes from all around the region claim otherwise :))

    • Studetica iz BiH says:

      Mr MM,
You are wrong. When you try to talk abotut constitutional rights of BiH people, you shold learn the next:
National or official languages in BiH are Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian (BHS).
All official documents of state institutions are published in all 3 official languages.
If you want to work in public service you must have knowledge of all 3 of them (they are practicaly the same) and 2 letters (latinic and cirilic).
I don’t know who you are or where are you from, but this is something that any schoolar in BiH would know.

Dear M.M. I call it the way Muftija Zukorlic himself calls it, Bosnian (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AfUnDAZ0wg).

Dear Mr. Bieber, In Albania, we have not stopped there but now we have also the Planetary University of Tirana. Isn’t it great?!! Now there are in total 54 universities in Albania and more to come.

  7. Ld says:

Looking at the picture itself, i agree with Florian. But I don’t think that just a picture or some comments about it, would anyhow downgrade the prestige and the values of the University. On the other side, this whole thing can be used as a suggestion or an idea for IUOS to consider replacing the picture.

  8. James says:

Hello friends, how is all, and what you would like to say about this article, in my view its
    in fact remarkable for me.

  9. Sherlock says:

My opinion is that University of Struga and UDG shouldn’t have been in this list.
Speaking of mockery, I recommend that an analysis of the private universitys in Albania would be welcome … there’s enough bizarre material.
